Dr Elizabeth Knight
Lizzie is a chartered psychologist and Doctor of Counselling Psychology with over 15 years' experience in the NHS. She has worked as a senior psychologist across specialist inpatient and community mental health services, as part of a clinical health psychology team within general
hospital surgical wards, and for a staff assistance programme. This experience gives her a broad range of experience supporting people with workplace pressures, mental health concerns and physical health challenges.
She approaches assessment and therapy from a compassionate and holistic perspective, recognising that sometimes taking the first steps to seek help can feel daunting and stressful. She therefore prioritises building trust and a respectful, non-judgemental working relationship, with a focus on creating a safe, down-to-earth space in which clients feel listened to and respected.
Lizzie recognises that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to psychological therapy is not helpful, and that as people’s lives progress, unexpected experiences can shift priorities. Therefore, at different times in life, different approaches to therapy may be needed. Using evidence-based methods, she develops an understanding of each of her clients’ difficulties and plans therapy in collaboration with clients, tailoring her approach to each client’s needs, preferences, and circumstances. When appropriate, she also provides psychoeducation and signposts to evidence-based materials, useful services, and resources. She maintains a long-standing interest in research on gut health and the links between nutrition, our gut microbiome, inflammation levels across bodily systems, and the impact these have on psychological wellbeing and brain health.
Lizzie is skilled at addressing many issues that negatively affect mood, thought processes, relationships, stress levels and overall wellbeing. Having worked with specialist mental health services for individuals with complex needs and within general hospital surgical and medical wards, supporting individuals receiving treatment and managing outcomes for cancer, MS, ME, Long Covid, Lupus, stroke, heart, respiratory and gastric problems, and other acute and long-term conditions, she has developed knowledge and skills in working with the links between an individual’s physical and mental health.
Lizzie works in an integrative and collaborative manner, drawing on evidence-based biological, psychological and social understandings of mental health and physical wellbeing to address clients’ difficulties and support their growth. She is a member of the Compassionate Mind Foundation and, in addition to her core training in CBT, is a qualified Cognitive Analytic Therapist and has trained in EMDR, Mindfulness-Based Therapies and Compassion-Focused Therapy. She also draws on narrative therapy-based approaches when working with trauma and bereavement and has extensive experience of working with family carers and those supporting people living with dementia. Lizzie enjoys working with individuals of all ages, cultures and identities, and has worked with adolescents and adults with diagnoses of Autism, Down’s Syndrome and Williams Syndrome.
She has provided training and clinical supervision to trainees and psychologists working within the NHS and is registered as a clinical practice supervisor with the British Psychological Society. She has personal interests in the benefits of movement, breathwork and social dancing for mental health, the positive impact of different types of music, outdoor activities and compassion-focused practices.
